Open Office for the Mac

I switched to a MacBook Pro about a year ago.  A dirty little secret is that I do all my word processing in Windows.  I needed to purchase Office 2007  for a client project a while back and its price tag made the decision for me.

On the Mac I wanted an open source solution for quickly editing documents.  I know that Pages is great and Office for Mac can be ok at times but I already paid for Office 2007.

I tried the previous version of Open Office that targeted the X11 interface and it was crap.  It really felt like going through a wormhole to 1995 when that ugly application finally opened on my screen.

I hesitantly downloaded Open Office version 3 today and I was pleasantly surprised.  The fact that it is a native Mac application is much appreciated.  Ok, the overall look of Open Office still needs work but it is now reached the "good enough" level for me.

I'm looking forward to future releases.  This is the first release that showed that Open Office is ready for the Mac.
