If you use a Mac then you likely use the Growl system for notifications. Instant messaging applications such as Adium and Skype use this system by default to popup a notification on the desktop when a message is sent to you.
I wanted to get this notification running for Mail and it is easy as pie... when you download Growl, take a look in the extras folder and you'll find the GrowlMail installer.
Once installed, open the Mail preferences and click on the GrowlMail icon. Check the "Enable GrowlMail" option you are now set up for mail notifications.
